Chickens

Chickens are one of the most valuable animals you can add to your preparedness plan. They require minimal space, low daily upkeep, and provide reliable food outputs that continue even during supply-chain disruptions. Whether you live on acreage or in a suburban backyard, chickens offer fast, renewable returns that support long-term self-reliance.

Chickens contribute to a preparedness mindset by providing:
• Daily food production (eggs)
• Seasonal protein supply (meat)
• Fertilizer for gardens and compost systems
• Pest control in yards, gardens, and orchards
• Breedable, renewable livestock you can expand or trade

When feed prices rise or grocery shelves thin out, having a dependable flock turns uncertainty into security.

Our Focus

Why We Focus on Heritage, Dual-Purpose Breeds — Not the Common Store-Bought Breeds

Most feed stores sell breeds designed for one thing: maximum commercial production. They’re great for industrial farms, but not ideal for preparedness, homesteading, or long-term sustainability. Here’s why our flock is built around Light Sussex, Rhode Island Whites, American Breese, and Hollands instead of common feed-store hybrids.

Store-Bought Breeds Are Usually Hybrid Layers or Meat Birds

Feed stores typically carry:

  • ISA Browns

  • Production Reds

  • Golden Comets

  • Cornish Cross

  • High-production hybrids

These birds are bred for short-term output, not longevity.

Hybrids = great layers for 1–2 years, then a sharp decline.
Cornish Cross = incredible meat birds but live short, fragile lives.

For preparedness, you need birds that last, reproduce, and thrive without constant replacement.

Our Breeds Reproduce True—Hybrids Do Not

A key preparedness principle is renewability.

  • Hybrid layers do not breed true, meaning you can’t reliably hatch your own replacement hens.

  • Cornish Cross cannot reproduce naturally and often won’t survive past 10–12 weeks.

Our heritage breeds do reproduce true.
You can hatch your own eggs, raise your own replacements, and stay self-reliant—no store required.

Heritage Breeds Are Hardier and More Self-Sufficient

Light Sussex, R.I. Whites, American Breese, and Hollands:

  • Handle Colorado temperature swings

  • Resist disease better

  • Free-range more efficiently

  • Can live productive 5–8 year lives

  • Thrive with lower inputs than commercial hybrids

These birds perform well without high-tech commercial feed schedules or heat lamps—perfect for homesteads and preppers.

4. Dual Purpose = Balanced Food Security

Store birds tend to be one-dimensional:

  • Hybrid layers: eggs only, poor meat quality

  • Cornish Cross: meat only, can’t survive long-term

Our breeds offer both:

  • Strong egg production

  • Good carcass size

  • Efficient feed conversion

  • Sustainable year-round protein

Dual-purpose birds keep your flock simple, sustainable, and cost-effective.

Heritage Breeds Integrate Better Into a Closed-Loop Homestead

They are superior for:

  • Compost systems

  • Garden pest control

  • Foraging on pasture

  • Cold- and heat-adapted egg production

  • Maintaining stable flock genetics

These traits are extremely valuable when you’re building long-term resilience.

Preparedness Requires Livestock That Can Thrive Without the Feed Store

If supply chains break or feed prices spike, you want birds that can handle:

  • Kitchen scraps

  • Garden surplus

  • Forage

  • Lower-protein feeds

  • Weather extremes

Heritage breeds do this naturally.
Commercial production breeds do not.
